OLS Heroes: The Mercury Seven

Fifty-five years ago today, April 9, 1959, NASA named the seven men who would become America's first astronauts and assigned them to Project Mercury.  The men (Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra, Gordon Cooper, Deke Slayton), known as the Mercury Seven and pictured below, would go on to participate in all the NASA projects in the 20th century and would become immortalized by Tom Wolfe's book, and the Hollywood's film adaptation, The Right Stuff.

If you haven't read the book or seen the movie, I strongly suggest you do one or the other. It's an incredible story of amazing human achievement, one I found (still find!) tremendously inspiring!
