Good, but....

David Boaz, in a post at Cato-@-Liberty, discusses the results of a recent poll suggesting that the majority of Americans prefer small government to larger government, a result that has been consistent, apparently, for several decades.  Here's a chart of the results dating back to 1984 (as always, click to enlarge):
While these results seem encouraging, it does raise the question of why this isn't reflected in the Presidential elections?  I mean, we just re-elected an in-your-face statist, and he's following a huge government Republican in Bush the Younger.  And almost every President since FDR has left the government larger than when he took over.  Thus, you'll have to excuse me if I'm a little skeptical on this one.
